The Eco Collection

INTRODUCING – THE ECO-FRIENDLY T-SHIRT COLLECTION

We’ve kicked off 2019 with our eco-friendly t-shirt collection. With more and more businesses such as McDonald’s and Google1 making positive changes for the environment, maybe it’s something we all need to begin to think about when it comes to buying.

Naturally silky, anti-static bamboo. Recycled pre-consumer organic cotton. The two come together to form our men’s and women’s eco-friendly t-shirts.

Our men’s bamboo t-shirts deliver the unexpected. Its silky and soft touch goes against the norm, shunting the rough expectation some might have for the material.

Light and breathable – we take the weight off your shoulders as you take the first steps in your sporting adventure.

Made from 60% recycled pre-consumer cotton organically grown and 40% recycled post-consumer polyester, our women’s recycled t-shirts are pinning down preconceptions of organic clothing and pushing up your confidence in eco-friendly t-shirts.

Discovery starts from within – see our full eco collection:

battling mental health

5 SUGGESTIONS TO HELP BATTLE MENTAL HEALTH

Taboo aside, mental health is a f*cker. It can affect anyone, any age, and any gender, it has no bounds. Whilst there is help out there available, it’s just as important to make people aware that what they do, can make all the difference.

1. Make time for yourself

We live in a busy world, with busy lifestyles. But it’s important that everyone has some down time now and again. Shield this time and use it for your own selfish gain – without guilt! Whether you want to try drawing, yoga or even just put your feet up for a few hours, block out this time where there are no distractions, where you can settle down and chill. It doesn’t matter how much or how little you get done, having this ‘me time’ can significantly help with your mental health.

2. Keeping yourself active

Boosting self-esteem, concentration and sleep, exercise is a great way to make a start on the offence with mental health. Exercise comes in many forms, this doesn’t need to be the typical gym-going type, this could just be gardening, taking a walk or even just nipping into town.

3. We are what we eat

Focusing on eating well and changing our diets could be just the ticket we need to start getting on track for better mental health. According to Stranges, S., Samaraweera, a well-balanced diet rich in vegies and nutrients could be responsible for feeling good. So, what types of food help with wellbeing:

  • Variation of fruit and vegetables
  • Wholegrain cereals or bread
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Dairy
  • Oily fish
  • Plenty of water

(According to the Mental Health Foundation website – take a read through some of their publications).

4. Having a chat

This one may sound odd to some, but have you ever felt out of touch or even distant from friends or family? Take some time out to have a chat with them. Supportive friends and family around us can often help when dealing with mental health, talking to someone also can take that weight off.

5. Take a step back – take a break

Sometimes we all need to take a break, a step out and a change of pace can often help with mental health. If you’re feeling tired, give yourself some time to sleep, relax or even just breathe.

Step out comfort zone

STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE; IT’S ONE OF THE MOST EMPOWERING THINGS YOU’LL DO

Pushing yourself into the unknown is quite a scary thought. The decision to reach outside of our comfort zone enables us to gain new skills and pushes us to the next level. So, what’s stopping you from making that leap?

You should always be open to the possibility of trying something new. Things like saying f**k this and going to a movie alone (which we highly recommend by the way, there’s nothing more liberating than sitting back and stuffing your face with popcorn in front of the screen without shame), or, trying something at the restaurant other than the usual ‘steak and chips’.

There are times in life when you don’t get a choice when it comes to stepping out of your comfort zone. There will be times when you will need to for work or when getting a new job. For example, you could be told that you have to hold a meeting at work displaying your proposed project, even though you’re normally the one sat out back pulling it together and leave the talking to someone else. These types of opportunity, whilst daunting, can be a space for improvement and should be jumped on at every opportunity.

‘But why?’, you may be asking. Well, here are but a few reasons:

  1. Do you want to live with regrets or ‘what ifs’ floating in your mind?
  2. You never know what will come of it
  3. You’ll find a newfound confidence and motivation

THE CHALLENGES

Now, we’re not going to tell you it’s going to be smooth sailing. Because it won’t be.

Sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone can go wrong, or it can be a little wobbly or maybe you’re just not very good at it. But so what? You’ve decided to step out of your comfort zone for a reason, right? If we’re not rubbish at something, are we even human?

You may face challenges along the way, (carrying on with our example), you may end up stuttering or feeling like you’ve made a complete fool of yourself in front of your work colleagues. But all in all, everyone has had to start somewhere and I’m sure others have been in your position too – if they haven’t, we’re pretty sure that they’re lying.

The important part of stepping out of your comfort zone is the takeaway – How do you feel now that you’ve conquered it? What did you learn from it? How can you improve next time? What would you do differently? Line some goals out for what you want to achieve and when. This is your starting point for development.

DO IT TOGETHER – YOU’RE NOT ALONE

If at first, the decision to do something new totally freaks you out, just know that everyone feels uneasy to start with when stepping out of their comfort zone. Speak with a family member, a friend, or even a work colleague. You don’t have to take this leap of faith alone, there is support for you. If it’s your first-time giving blood, for example, why not ask someone if they would do it too?

(If you’re actually interested in giving blood, please follow this link to the NHS website.)

Paintballers by day, pub-goers by night. We are George and Charlie Yapp, directors of Matter Clothing™. We’re all about extreme sports and trying new and exciting things that will make our hairs stand on end. George and Charlie Yapp Paintball

WHY WE WENT INTO CLOTHING

We wanted something to reflect our sense of adventure and free-spiritedness (if that’s a word!), and to share this with as many fun-loving people as possible.

We started Matter Clothing™ because we wanted to create a brand centred around activewear that’s both comfortable and soft – a brand that, when you buy something from them, you know will not only look great, but feel great, too. We have found we couldn’t shake the feeling we’d be having an even better time if what we were wearing was more comfortable. It might seem like such a small starting point, but it’s something that we realised really mattered to us.

WHY WE LOVE OUR MEN’S STREETWEAR

Our men’s streetwear reflects our athletic and fun nature – that’s why. We’ve come up with some pretty crazy designs, and we hope you love them too. Our men’s hoodies and t-shirts truly achieved what we set out to do, become comfortable whilst also showing our weirder and more athletic side.

WHY FAILURE IS VITAL TO SUCCEEDING YOUR FITNESS GOALS

Matter Clothing . -Surfing - Why Failure Is Vital to Succeeding Your Fitness Goals

I think it’s safe to say, that we have all experienced failure, one way or another and sometimes it has gotten to us more than we intended. It can be too easy to give up when we fail our first fitness goal, or even our second, or third. But what if we told you that failure is a vital part of succeeding your goals? Failure can be viewed in many ways, such as not reaching your run time or distance when you wanted to, or even not hitting your weight target. It is important that whilst failure can be disheartening, you do not give in - for failure helps us to recognise where we went wrong, and how we can improve it for next time.

SHOP OUR MENS HOODIES AND MENS T-SHIRTS

MEN’S GREY MARL LONG-SLEEVE T-SHIRT WITH BLACK LOGO [LONG]

When failure has reached us, we’ve used it as a chance to better our exercise routine to help us get closer to achieving our fitness goals. The challenge is to not let it beat you. Whilst self-pity may be at the forefront of your mind, it is important to realise that you need to move on, even if that means hitting another failure straight afterwards and facing that enemy time and time again to reach your fitness goals.

Focusing on your strengths won’t make you develop physically and mentally. Whilst it can feel great to be good at something, it is our weaknesses that need that need to be at the focus. It is when these areas are exposed, that you can strengthen your ability and mentality, but also bring you one step closer to your fitness goals.

Our biggest competition will always be ourselves, so work hard, fail, get back up and succeed.

You’ve got this. Get the conversation going on our Facebook or Twitter.

Matter Clothing - Why Skateboarding is Good for Your Health

WHY SKATEBOARDING IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH

Other than being an extreme sport which is great at keeping you exercised and socialised, skateboarding has a whole other can of health benefits just waiting to be unlocked…

FLEXIBILITY – Flexible ankles and a nimble body are the key ingredients when it comes to skateboarding. The more tense and inflexible you are, the more difficult it will be to learn how to skate. But as it is with everything, you’ll never get any better if you don’t give it a chance.

WORKOUT – When skating, you’re moving your whole body. Your feet and legs to are used to move and your arms to balance, whilst your body in turn, twists. The average person will burn between 150-500 calories per hour (according to ReSYNC Your Life: 28 Days to a Stronger, Leaner, Smarter, Happier You by Samir Becic). Not only will you be sweating, you’ll also be increasing your levels of endurance.

STRESS RELIEF – Skateboarding doesn’t exclusively decrease stress levels, pretty much any and all forms of physical activity can achieve this. For some, skating is an opportunity to take their mind off of other things. Not only can skateboarding help tackle stress, it can also affect your overall health. As with all exercise, you can help negate the risk of health issues such as obesity and high blood pressure.

PATIENCE, PRACTICE AND CONSEQUENCES – We’ve all seen the videos, the ones where someone attempts a really cool trick, but ultimately ends up regretting it. Well, skateboarding teaches you patience and eventually you learn how to calculate risks better. You’ll try that trick you’ve gotten hyped over and don’t land it, so you try again. This time, you’ll make minor adjustments to your foot positioning and speed. Failing that, you’ll start teaching yourself how to fall properly and build up your pain tolerance.

If you’re looking to try out a new skill, we highly recommend you give skateboarding a try. It’s not only physically good but will also help the mind and soul.

What got you into skateboarding? Let us know, hit us up on Twitter or Facebook!

Matter Clothing - 5 Tips To Get You Started On Your New Year's Fitness Goals

5 TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED ON YOUR NEW YEAR’S FITNESS GOALS

Have you got your New Year’s resolution sorted? Not that everyone needs to make one. But if you’re looking to get fit, why not make this month your starting point? Here are our five tips to get your New Year’s fitness goals in order…

DEVISE A PLAN

Thinking that you want to get fitter and healthier is one thing, but if you’re really going to commit to it, you’ll need to devise a plan. Where do you want to be in three months, or six months even? Set yourself goals and then express how you plan to get to that point. Start by putting three days aside for fitness a week and see where it goes from there.

ARE YOU BEING REALISTIC?

Sometimes we can get a little carried away with our goals, if you’ve never really lifted weights before, you can’t expect to lift 80kg on the first hit. Build up your expectations as you would your weights. Go steady, besides, you can always increase your targets!

PREP YOUR MEALS

Don’t let bad eating habits get in the way of your New Year’s fitness goals. Just because you’re exercising regularly, doesn’t mean that you can get away with a fatty breakfast, lunch and dinner! Although, that does sound tempting…

If you’re serious about getting fit and healthy, do some research on healthier meal options – even if it is just adding more vegies to your diet, or cutting down on the caffeine or sugar.

To save time and stress during the day, why not prep your meals? If you’re a super busy person, take some time in the evening or early morning to prepare your meals for the day. Whack the slow cooker on and make some lunch. That way, you’ll be ready to face the day ahead.

PERFECTION ISN’T THE GOAL

This is the most important of our five tips – not every workout is going to make you feel like a champ. Sometimes, you can have a really naff session and get frustrated because you haven’t reached your goal for that day. But that’s okay!

Don’t strive for perfection, strive for doing a bit better each time.

ANY EXERCISE IS BETTER THAN NONE

Going to the gym isn’t the only way you can reach your New Year’s fitness goals. If you prefer the outdoors, why not try walking, running or cycling? And if you’re brave enough, take a dip in the sea (although, we wish you luck… it’s too cold for our liking!). Explore different ways you can get fit, find a couple that you like and alternate between them. Just enjoy it, don’t put too much pressure on yourself!

THE LINK BETWEEN EXERCISE AND WORK PERFORMANCE

It’s well known that regular exercise can lead to better mental health, but did you know that exercise can also help with development within the workplace?

For some, waking up early and completing a fresh workout doesn’t appeal to them, or others may get up right away and go cycle, or even run before or to work. Here are 3 key factors to take into the workplace from your sports activities.

The Power of Analysis

Embrace constructive criticism, yes, you heard us right. Accepting that your workouts may not be perfect and that there are always things you can improve upon is key to self-development both when exercising, and when at work.

Exercise Failure and Success

Learning comes from doing. Failing first-hand in the moment not only improves how you can analyse your mistakes, but it also motivates you to learn. The interchange of interactions and knowledge with your coach, personal trainer or work colleagues are all significant tools in your learning and development process. The sooner you go out and try something new, the quicker you will learn from your mistakes and discover how to make big progress.

Teaming with Success

Teaming means working with a range of teams and individuals to help further your expertise through the imitation of other’s behaviours. So, when you’re out on your next workout, why not exercise with some buddies? Observe and take notes on how to better your routine or the way you construct your workouts. This type of learning can be used both at work, and in the gym. Besides, teamwork makes the dream work.

Matter Clothing - Setting Yourself New Challenges Can Make You A Better Leader

CLIMBING INTO CHALLENGES CAN MAKE YOU A BETTER LEADER

Being a leader isn’t all about getting the job done, it’s also about self-improvement and challenging yourself to be the best leader that you can be. Trying out a new challenge for the first time can be daunting, but when you really think about it, what’s the worst that can happen? Your fear is what is getting in the way of you and developing your leadership skills and qualities.

Let’s take climbing as an example. When you’re beginning the climb, you are there with the equipment, your instructor and your doubt. Trust and communication are both important aspects to making a successful climb. You’ll find yourself relaying communications and instructions to and from with your instructor, whilst realising your safety is in both their, and your own hands. The clearer your intensions, the clearer and more successful the results will be.

STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE. SHOP OUR MEN’S ROCK CLIMBING T-SHIRTS AND HOODIES

Matter Clothing: How to Battle Stress Levels with Pure Exercise
Men’s Charcoal Grey T-Shirt With White Logo

Not only will climbing develop communication and trust, you’ll have to strategize your route. A successful climb will need careful and thorough strategy and planning – thoughts like, ‘ifI latch onto that bit, will I get a good hold on that ledge?’, will cross your mind, but that’s not a bad thing. Proving you can successfully plan and manage your route will prove that you can skilfully navigate towards your goals.

It’s not going to be easy. If at first you aren’t successful, try again. Analysing is one thing, but the confidence to push yourself to achieve what may seem impossible is another. If you want to succeed, you’ll need to consider both of these points.

Ask for feedback – it’s important to know where you’re going wrong and where you are doing well. Just remember, improvement is your goal! So, don’t get too hung up if the feedback is more negative than positive.

You’ll be learning in stages before you jump right into the deep end. From building up your log book with many different experiences like instructor led routes with graded rock climbs, led routes at a climbing wall and instructor led routes with outdoor bolt protected sport climbs. This may seem like a lot of prep work, but just like workplace scenarios, you can’t just expect someone to take on a task they’ve never done before and expect it to go smoothly without proper training.

If you’re interested in taking part in rock climbing, why not take a look at Mountain Training.

MATTER CLOTHING’S 10 WORKOUT STEPS TO BATTLE WINTER WEIGHT

Matter Clothing's 10 Workout Steps to Battle Winter Weight

Some may wake up one morning, look in the mirror and think, ‘damn, I need to start working out ‘, especially with Christmas on its way and excessive winter eating… However, there’s so much more you need to think about before you immediately hit the treadmill and jump the rope.

  1. Consider what is achievable. If you’ve never really been into running, you can’t expect yourself to run for 20 minutes, five times a week. That’s both exhausting, and unhealthy – you’re not giving your body enough time to rest and repair the muscles.

  1. Get your workout goals in order – you should consider setting short-term, and long-term goals. Where do you want to be in a month’s time? Or even a year’s time? This is a great time to keep on track with your progress.

  1. Find a type of exercise you can get on with and gets on with you. Everyone is different, some prefer to hit the gym, some like to be in the privacy of their own home with YouTube workouts. Do some recon and try a bit of everything, see how you get on.

  1. Take your time. If you’re going straight in for an intense workout after not exercising for a while, it’s going to hurt! Start off gradually and slowly build up your workouts into a routine.

  1. It’s not going to be all sunshine and rainbows. Loosing weight takes time and patience. Over this time, you may experience days where your workout wasn’t as spectacular as you thought. But that’s okay, just take a step back and try it again. Try not to get into the habit of bailing on planned workouts, it’s difficult, we know that, but you’ve got to keep going!

  1. If you’re looking to lose weight and get healthier, consider healthy eating. Try researching different meal ideas that are both fun and nutritious, so you can still enjoy what you eat.

  1. It’s okay to take time for yourself. Being selfish and saying no to a night out isn’t the worst thing that can happen, especially if you’re taking the time to beast through your workout.

  1. Make sure you up the anti when your body is ready. When you first set out, you may lose weight quickly, but as you continue to work out, your body becomes adjusted to the work you’re putting in, so it may become easier to run a few miles for example. This is your body’s way of telling you you’re ready for greater things – now’s the time to add the extra weight, or go the extra mile.

  1. Give yourself a reward. If you’re sticking to strict meal plans, zero alcohol and no wiggle room for free-time, you’re bound to feel down in the dumps sooner or later. If you’ve had a good week at the gym or had a killer workout, make sure you reward yourself with something you like. Besides, you’ve earnt it.

  1. Make your mental health is your top priority. It’s all well and good if you’re doing your workouts to help battle your mental health, but if you’re having a hard day, remember that you’re doing great and it’s okay to take a day to yourself if you need it.
